on Monday and Tuesday we pretty much returned to the drudgery of clerical
work around the Global Headquarters. The only thing interesting, beerwise,
was our first trip to Standard Tap, which had opened only a few days before.
It's up the street from 700 Club, at 2nd & Poplar in Northern Liberties, at
the site of the old Bull's Head Inn. It's now owned by William Reed (former
brewer at the late Samuel Adams Brew House) and his partner, Paul, who redid
the place in wood by hand for the looks of a finely-finished country pub.
Ever the supporter of the local brewing community, William serves only draft
beer there, and only that from Fertile Crescent breweries. He retooled 2 old
English handpumps from the 1950s for cask-conditioned beer, and has a small,
friendly menu on the chalkboard above the deeply-grained bar. We had a plate
of smelts and drank glasses of Golden Monkey and cask-conditioned HopDevil
from Victory with some friends, while Beer Baby rocked back and forth in his
mother's arms, squirming and gurgling and beaming through drool-drenched lips,
gleefully schrunching his little fists up to his cheeks whenever the group
